As 92 teams battled it out at the weekend in the eighth round of the Coupe de France, one historic club was notably absent.

Kylian Mbappé’s Stade Malherbe Caen were left kicking their heels after a shock exit to Bayeux FC in the previous round. A club once used to mingling with the best of French football, Les Malhebres were instead eliminated from the national cup competition two rounds before Ligue 1 sides begin to worry about the potential of an awkward trip to some far-flung amateur outpost.

The Normandy side may be in French football’s third tier, National 1, but they are anything but an unknown name. They had played 40 years in the top two levels before their embarrassing relegation under the ownership of Mbappé last term.
