If Olympique Lyonnais’ decision to bench Rayan Cherki for the crucial Ligue 1 encounter against LOSC Lille on April 5 came as something of a surprise, what was not at all a shock was that the playmaker proved OL’s matchwinner.

The 21-year-old might not be single-handedly spearheading the charge of Paulo Fonesca’s side to the top four—hat tip to Georges Mikautadze—but there is no doubt that his influence has been critical.

Perhaps more than any other player to emerge in Ligue 1 in recent years, Cherki is the one that neutrals have most wanted to succeed.
