✍️ Inside PSG's January Transfer Plans as Injury Storm Continues
Paris Saint-Germain has great squad depth, but one or two January signings could propel them to another UEFA Champions League title.
An injury storm was overdue at PSG, but few would have predicted just how significantly it would affect Luis Enrique’s squad.
After some remarkable luck on the selection front last term, Les Parisiens are paying for it now. Players have been struck down left, right, and center in the early weeks of the campaign. Whether it’s been their desire to get back on the field quickly or a lack of senior options for the head coach, PSG has already been burned by rushing their stars back.
Ousmane Dembélé and Désiré Doué are presently laid up for their second significant spells out since the summer, while Bradley Barcola has been suffering from fatigue, with his physical level and form consequently affected.
This is part of a second wave of injuries that PSG have suffered since August. As well as the Ballon d’Or winner and the Golden Boy, Achraf Hakimi and Nuno Mendes are laid up. While the impact of the full-backs for Luis Enrique has been lauded over the last year, their influence still feels underrated, with the pair irreplaceable in terms of what they bring to the squad.
PSG’s Ligue 1 performance has been criticized, yet given the resources Luis Enrique has been left to work with, the club's overall performance remains impressive. With another fiendish Champions League draw, the Spaniard has made it his priority to negotiate the group stage in Europe at the expense of domestic performances. Victory in Barcelona with a scratch team was a particularly impressive result.
But does it need to be a choice between performance in one competition or another? Wouldn’t another couple of signings ease the pressure on the club’s wafer-thin roster of senior pros?
