Paris Saint-Germain’s fairytale season might have been closed out in nightmare fashion in the FIFA Club World Cup as Chelsea surprisingly blew them away. Yet, the 3-0 defeat to Enzo Maresca’s side provided a valuable reminder of how fine the margins are at the top level.

For the first time in months, Luis Enrique’s side looked limp and lifeless, a shadow of the side that had charged to the showpiece event in New Jersey.

But let’s not allow 90 minutes to obliterate what has been a historic campaign that saw the European Cup head to the City of Lights for the first time.

Indeed, the loss to Chelsea could ultimately prove to be a long-term positive. It’s a reminder that even the best clubs need to seek constant improvement and remain humble. The quest for improvement must be relentless.

And with around €90 million bagged from the Club World Cup, PSG have more than enough to cover the arrival of one top-level player or, more likely, several supplementary options.
