We’re not even one full season removed from Kylian Mbappé's departure for Real Madrid, but it’s obvious that Paris Saint-Germain lacks two things: goals and a superstar, and the youngsters, while talented, haven’t ascended to the level that PSG needs.
The lack of goals could very well cost PSG a place in the knockout stage of the UEFA Champions League. There are still three matches left to turn that around, but thus far, there’s been no evidence to lead supporters to believe the current squad is capable of winning games in the Champions League regardless of the opponent.
Off the pitch, the lack of a superstar has not only impacted PSG’s finances but also Ligue 1. It’s no secret that the French top flight has struggled to secure a lucrative broadcast deal, and a major reason for that is Mbappé, Lionel Messi, and Neymar Jr. no longer suit up for Les Parisiens. Those players have global appeal and can attract casual viewers. Their names alone force media outlets to discuss PSG and Ligue 1, but without them, the league is now largely ignored and saddled with a broadcast deal that is shaky at best.
