It may only have been a couple of weeks since PSG lifted the UEFA Champions League crown for the first time in Munich, but the seemingly never-ending calendar continues with another major tournament as the FIFA Club World Cup kicks off.

Fuelled by the confidence gained by becoming European champions, PSG travel west to the US with the aim of adding the world title to their treble.

There are naturally high expectations on the Parc des Princes side, but caution should be exercised: the season has been both long and gruelling, while the group that PSG finds itself in is unquestionably the most taxing drawn. Atletico Madrid, Botafogo, and Seattle Sounders all lie in wait, and with the Champions League safely tucked in its trophy cabinet, PSG are a target like never before.

Adding to Les Parisiens’ challenge is the fact that this is entirely new ground. Never before have the squads of Europe’s top sides been stretched to this degree when players expect to be on their holidays. Yes, there are international competitions, but even the very biggest clubs will only lose part of their squad.

If PSG goes to the final, there will be less than a month until the beginning of Ligue 1. In short, this is a balancing act that has never been attempted before, so the players, coaching staff, and club are entering the process blind. It may take weeks or even months for the repercussions of such an exertion to become clear.

By the same token, this is not a competition that can be considered a throwaway. With €115 million in prize money up for grabs, it is a lucrative opportunity for the club to showcase itself both in terms of its quality of football and appeal to neutral fans.

So that’s the scene: what can we expect from PSG?
