✍️ Enzo Fernández to PSG: What the Rumor Means for PSG’s Transfer Strategy

Paris Saint-Germain already has a talented midfield, but Enzo Fernández would bring a tactical alternative that could make a difference in key matches.

Paris Saint-Germain fans finally have a proper transfer rumour to get their teeth into with the news that Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernández is being targeted by Luis Enrique’s side.

The deal is being set up for the summer, with the Parc des Princes side not expected to make any moves in January, having only strengthened with Lucas Chevalier and Ilya Zabarnyi in the summer.

Luis Enrique elected to leave his Champions League-winning squad relatively untouched, but over recent weeks and months, it has become increasingly evident that more depth and a fresh impetus are required if PSG is to reconquer Europe.

By the time the summer rolls around, Les Parisiens’ top players will have been in action incessantly for two years thanks to the FIFA Club World Cup. Many will, of course, head to North America with their nations for the World Cup, further adding to their already formidable workload.

The squad, built around just 14 or 15 elite players, supplemented by youngsters from the academy, is suffering. After riding their luck on the injury front last term, PSG have been persistently troubled with problems this term.

On top of this, there is a sense that even a team as strong as PSG needs a fresh dimension brought to their play.

As Marquinhos commented to Ligue 1 TV at half-time during the recent 3-0 win against Lille: “Teams know more and more how to exploit our weak points. That’s normal. It’s been three years with the coach.”

It’s not a call to rip up everything that Luis Enrique has achieved, of course, but it is a warning that PSG needs to develop. Enzo Fernández is the type of player who will allow them to do just that.
