Matvey Safonov has been an unlikely and largely unwilling disruptive force at Paris Saint-Germain this season.

Signed from Krasnodar for €20 million in the summer of 2024, the Russia international quietly put together an impressive first season at Parc des Princes. He would make 17 appearances and, in this time, put together a series of shot-stopping statistics that were superior to those of Gianluigi Donnarumma.

While the big Italian grabbed the headlines for his performances in clutch moments in the UEFA Champions League, he was outperformed by Safonov in terms of save % (73.2 vs 70.1), clean sheet % (43.8 vs 27.5), and perhaps most surprisingly, in terms of PSxG+/- (0.2 vs -1.1).

For a comparatively unheralded player, the 26-year-old took a great deal of the strain from the regular No.1.
